The negative socio-economic impacts of COVID in Malawi caused that the Government to take measures in order to mitigate the impacts of the disease, particularly in the most vulnerable households who have job insecurity issues in urban areas.
The project was coordinated by the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development (MoFEPD) and executed by the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare (MoGCDSW) with support of the city councils.
The SOPROEN team was in charge of the operative design and as well as the implementation of the Management Information System (MIS), software whose design was a replica of the Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP) with adjustments for this particular intervention, due to the speed with which the project was required.
A total of 138,000 households in the hotspots of the cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Zomba benefited from the intervention, representing approximately 35% of the poor who worked within the informal sector in these cities. Transfers were made through Mobile Money Operators (MMOs).
